Growing Deeper Questions

1. What was the first credit card you ever applied for? Was your application accepted? Did you receive a gift for applying? If so what was it?

2. Talk about your family of origin and how they handled money, what has your response been to money? Have you followed their pattern or revolted from it?

3. Charlie talked about setting 3 types of goals; giving, saving, and getting and remaining out of debt. Take a few minutes and write out a few simple 3 month, 1 year and 5 year goals in all three categories. Read the following verses to see a bit of God’s perspective: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, Galatians 6:6-10, Proverbs 12:1, Proverbs 13:22, 1 Corinthians 9:25, Romans 13:8, Psalms 37:21-22.

4. Discuss the concept of the indebted person being a servant to the lender. One of the most significant problems with debt is it presumes upon the future. Read Job 8:9 and James 4:13-16 and answer the following questions.

a. What assurances do you have regarding the future?

b. According to this passage what would borrowing actually be doing?

5. Is borrowing without repaying an option for the believer? (Psalms 37:21, Luke 16:1-8, Luke 19: 12-27)

6. Be encouraged that God desires for you to have your financial life in balance because He knows that the freedom you will experience will enhance your life. Read Isaiah 55, what encouraged you in this passage? Who can hold you accountable to the goals you set today? Meet with them and pray together, commit to finding freedom from debt through God’s provision.</itunes:summary>

“They trip and fall because they refuse to obey, just as predicted.
But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you — from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” (MSG)

3. WE ARE GIVEN A UNIQUE ________________________ .
“So do not be ashamed to tell people about our Lord Jesus, and do not be ashamed of me, in prison for the Lord. But suffer with me for the Good News. God, who gives us the strength to do that, saved us and made us his holy people.” (NCV) 2 Timothy 1:8-9

b. to free from moral imperfection

When the Bible speaks of “refining,” to which of these definitions does it refer?
4. Look up these verses, what does the Bible say about refining?

You’ve Got to Have Commitment - Part 2 of 5
2 Chronicles 16:9 (NLT) “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.”
FIVE COMMITMENTS THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY I LIVE
Love God 1. I COMMIT MY __________________________________________. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NLT) 2. I COMMIT TO ______________________________________________. “Let us go on… and become mature in our understanding, as strong Christians ought to be.” Hebrews 6:1 (LB) “Commit yourself to instruction; attune your ears to hear words of knowledge.” Proverbs 23:12 (NLT) “They must be committed to the revealed truths of the Christian faith and must live with a clear conscience." 1 Timothy 3:9 (NLT) Love Others 3. I COMMIT TO _____________________________. “God has given us the privilege of being born again so that we are now members of God’s own family." 1 Peter 1:3 (LB) “Be devoted to one another.” Romans 12:10 (NIV) 4. I COMMIT TO _____________________________________________. “For God was in Christ, restoring the world to Himself… This is the wonderful message He has given to us to tell others. We are Christ’s ambassadors. God is using us to speak to others.” 2 Corinthians 5:19-20 (LB) “So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."” Acts 1:6-8 (NIV) Serve the World 5. I COMMIT TO ___________________________________________. “God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other; passing on to others God’s many kinds of blessings.” 1 Peter 4:10 (LB) “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV)
JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF COMMITMENT
“We aren’t saved by knowing the commandments of God because we can’t and don’t keep them. But God put into effect a different plan to save us. He sent His own Son in a human body like ours … and destroyed sin’s control over us by giving Himself as a sacrifice for our sins.” Romans 8:3 (LB) “He gave His life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us His very own people, totally committed to doing what is right." Titus 2:14 (NLT) “When you think of what He’s done for you, is this too much to ask?” Romans 12:1 (LB) “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him to help you do it, and He will.” Psalm 37:5 (LB)</itunes:summary>

Lost and Found
Church on the Ridge

Why was Jesus attracted to and attractive to the unholy, unrighteous, ungodly people and unattractive to the holy, righteous, godly people?

Who should COTR be attracted to and attractive to?

JESUS TOLD STORIES ABOUT A LOST SHEEP A LOST COIN AND A LOST SON
Luke 15
1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. 8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

1. When you lose something, you focus on what is lost to the exclusion of what is secure.

2. People who are far from God are lost!

3. God focuses on lost people.
Luke 19:10
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. 13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' 20 So he got up and went to his father."But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' 28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' 31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." NIV

Growing Deeper Questions 5.16.2010
1. What is the last thing you can remember losing? What emotions surrounded the loss? Have you ever been lost? How did that feel?
2. What about the talk did you find interesting, challenging, or troubling?
3. If you had to identify with one of the three individuals in the third parable (the father, the prodigal, or the older brother), who would it be and why?
4. Reread Luke 15. Who was Jesus' audience when he told these stories? What message was He trying to communicate to each group? The Pharisees were muttering about Jesus eating with "sinners." Why was Jesus' parable a good response to these Pharisees? Consider the concept that both sons were lost. How does this apply to us today?
5. Read Psalms 106:32-38. How does God's treatment of Israel parallel the Father's treatment of His sons? Why does God care so much about repentance? What do the three parables reveal about God's love?
6. What value did the woman place on each coin? Why did she look so hard for it? How is a repentant sinner like a found sheep, coin, or son? How does the picture of "rejoicing in heaven" over repentance make you feel?
7. How can you guard yourself from feeling resentful when God shows mercy to people you think don't deserve it? Is there a totally undeserving person to whom you can extend God's love and forgiveness this week? How? How can your group help you?

About the fourth watch of the night He went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw Him walking on the lake, they thought He was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw Him and were terrified. Mark 6:48-50

6. If you still have doubts about yesterday's miracle, you may have

Common Thoughts

1. A loving God is not an _________God.

Psalm 145:17 & 20
17 Everything God does is right - the trademark on all his works is love.
20 God sticks by all who love him, but it's all over for those who don't. MSG

2. A Loving God would not _________ Hell.

Luke 16:24-31
So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" NIV

If I believe this what should I do?

2 Peter 3:9
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. NIV

Matthew 28:17-20
17 On the mountain they saw Jesus and worshiped him, but some of them did not believe it was really Jesus. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. 19 So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age." NCV

“All religions lead to the same God!”

“How can there be just one true religion”
“Religion just causes fights and wars”
How does religion tear away peace on earth?
1. Religion requires a belief in a set of _________ this leads to feelings of superiority over those who do not possess the same great truth.
2. Religion requires that you _________ those dogmas, this leads to ____________ yourself from those who do not.
3. ____________ leads to stereotyping those who do not practice like you.
4. ___________ leads to demeaning others, outright abuse and even violence against them.

What can we do?
I. Make Religion _________________

II. ________________ Religion
a. “All religions are equally valid and basically teach the same thing so why fight about it?
b. “Every religion sees a part of the truth but no one has the whole truth”
c. “Religion is cultural and not from a foundation of truth”
d. “Arrogant people insist their religion is right and try to convert others to it.

III. Keep Religion _______________

What is Religion? In its most basic form it is - “A belief of what life is all about and the reason for our existence”
Religion affects _______________ we do. It cannot be outlawed, denounced or kept private.
What does Jesus teach?
Matthew 5:21-22
"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brothers will be subject to judgment. NIV
Matthew 5:38-39
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. NIV
Matthew 5:43-44
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, NIV
Ephesians 2:8-10
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

“Can God make a rock so big He cannot lift it?”
The greatest display of power is not the creation of the universe but theresurrection of Jesus.
If the resurrection is not true the whole of Christianity is a joke!
“If Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And weapostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But thatcan't be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, thenChrist has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are stillguilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope inChrist is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.20 But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead.” 1 Corinthians 15:14-20

Matthew 22:374037Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your souland with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And thesecond is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40All the Law and the Prophetshang on these two commandments." NIV

All he'll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants inresponse to God, letting God's Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of reallife, eternal life.
Philippians 4:676 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, whichexceeds anything we can understand. James 2:141614 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show itby your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15 Suppose you see a brother orsister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Goodbye and have a good day;stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? NLT
Matthew 7:1212So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums upthe Law and the Prophets. NIV
